Tournament Format: How Teams Get to the Finals
The bracket narrows fast, and it’s worth understanding before the matches start:
Preliminaries – All 1,024 teams compete in this opening stage. The field gets cut down to 256, which regroups into 16 teams per bracket, sending 32 teams through to the pre-quarters.
Pre-Quarters – Those 32 qualified teams join 32 direct invites, for 64 total, split across 4 groups. The top 8 from each group advance.
Quarter-Finals – The surviving 32 teams split into 2 groups. The top 4 from each group punch a direct ticket to the Grand Finals. The remaining 12 per group don’t go home — they get one more shot in the semis.
Semi-Finals – 24 teams, 3 groups. Only the top 8 move on.
Grand Finals – 16 teams, one stage, and a champion at the end of it.
It’s a format that rewards consistency early and punishes complacency later — teams that cruise through prelims can still get bounced in the quarters if they don’t bring the same intensity.
